I do my best not to look in Darcy’s direction as Ryven calls in two of my fellow Zivonians to take her away and lock her up in the brig below the main deck.

To her credit, she doesn’t go kicking and screaming. She walks calmly between them, giving me one last glance before they escort her from the room. But I can see the fear in every line of her face, and it hurts me, despite everything.

Once she’s gone, Ryven calls in some of his most trusted advisors, his face tight with worry. He explains the situation in a clipped voice, telling them what happened exactly as I told him, and as I gaze at the expressions of those around me, my body goes cold as I consider the possibility that Darcy will receive no mercy.

“She doesn’t deserve help,” Savya says coldly. “Our people have suffered enough at the hands of the Kruul—and to be betrayed to them again like this? How could we trust that she wouldn’t lie again, or betray us further?”

On the surface, it makes sense. Savya is protective of our people, just as I am. And yet, when I hear his words, it sparks something deep and angry within me, something almost primal. I round on him, my muscles tightening with fury as my heart pounds in my chest. I can almost feel the soul mark pulse on my skin.

“Darcy had her reasons,” I grind out, narrowing my eyes as I take a step toward him.

Savya’s jaw clenches, and I can see him square his shoulders—not picking a fight, but clearly ready for one. “Our people have been through enough already without a Terran woman finishing the job for the Kruul.”

“I won’t hear you speak about her like that,” I growl at him. “We all know what desperation can drive someone to do. The Kruul threatened her sister, the only person she has left.”

We’re nearly nose to nose now, teeth bared. Savya’s eyes narrow, his skin shifting darker just as mine does, but before it can go any further, a hand grips my arm, pulling me backward at the same time Nyx angles himself between the two of us, urging Savya to step back.

“This isn’t a time to fight among ourselves,” Anzir says firmly, pulling me back even as I resist. “Get yourself under control.”

I drag in a breath, wrestling back the surge of emotions that are crashing around in my chest, anger and pain and betrayal all tangled together. Even as I struggle to keep myself from lunging at Savya again, still furious at hearing him speak that way about my mate, I know he wasn’t wrong. All the things he said were echoes of the same thoughts I had when Darcy first revealed her deception. No matter what reasons she had for helping the Kruul, and no matter how sorry she seems now, she could still lie or betray us again.

I’m furious at her, but I feel compelled to defend her anyway. My heart is a mess, and I’ve never felt so conflicted.
